Brake Rotors for 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

After pulling the front wheels off my wife's 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi, I realized that her front rotors are wearing thin. My goal was to replace her worn brake pads with a set of new Duralast Gold Cmax DGC1001 that I picked up today. Unfortunately, the massive rotor is too thick for my 1" micrometer. But from my experience, it's time to replace the rotors.

Unlike the brake pads, the rotor for the 2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi are quite difficult to source. And the price is quite steep. The most inexpensive ones I could source is the following parts from Amazon. The free Super Saver shipping will help save a bundle, as these rotors are massive and, therefore, heavy.

Raybestos 980362 Disc Brake Rotor (Front) - $136.99 shipped

Raybestos 980348 Disc Brake Rotor (Rear) - $115.31 shipped

I believe these are Raybestos PG Plus series. So far, I found no other inexpensive STi rotors. The other high performance rotors for STi are in the neighborhood of $300 to $700 dollars.

By the way, the thickness specification for these rotors are:

Front Thickness: 30mm
Front Minimum Thickness: 28mm

Rear Thickness: 20mm
Rear Minimum Thickness: 18mm

i bought a pair of these rotors 6 months ago after installing rear Brembo calipers on my '03 WRX. performance of these rotors was fine but after a few months of winter driving on salted roads they had severe rust and looked like they were about 10 years old.

i removed the rust with a 3M sanding disc on a drill, masked off the wheel studs and the swept part of the rotors and painted the un-swept areas with hi-temp (1,200 F) stainless steel paint (Steel It) which i bought from McMaster Carr. It worked great and the rotors look good as new now. so if you buy these and drive where there is salt on the roads you need to treat them to keep them looking good.

Wow. Really looks like Mater from Cars! Haha. Thanks for the tip, Norm.

Yeah, it looked pretty nasty! Here's what they look like after sanding and painting. I had some old pads on in case the paint transferred to them but saw none on the pads when i swapped in my new Brembo pads:

You can currently get Brembo 09.7812.11 UV-coated front rotors for '04 STIs for $73 each on eBay. I bought a couple of pair for $130/pair but have not tried them yet as my Centric Premium front rotors only have 10,000 miles on them (including a couple of visits to a track) and are holding up well. The coating on the Centric hats must be pretty good as they have minimal corrosion despite exposure to a lot of salt.

My bargain Raybestos rear 980348 rotors are also holding up well but need a touch up of the stainless steel paint.

Title: Duralast Gold vs. Duralast
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: After having good experience with the Cmax brake pads, I bought a pair of front ones to replace my wife's front STi brake pads. The part number for the front is "Duralast Gold Cmax DGC1001", while the rear part number is "Duralast Gold Cmax DGC961". I highly recommend these pads. I've attached a pho . . .
