Mac OS X Virtual Machine Has Incorrect TimeIf you run Mac OS X (say, Mountain Lion) in a virtual machine (VM) on Windows 8.1, then you've probably noticed that the time is off when Mac OS X boots. If your Mac OS X virtual machine is always on the net, it's not so bad, because it will automatically sync with Apple's NTP server (time.apple.com). But if you are on a notebook computer and you may be at places without Internet connection, then it becomes a bigger issue. But there is a trick to get around this issue. Windows 8 has a built-in NTP server that you can easily enable by typing two commands on the command-line. But download the "Start NTP Server (GPL)" batch script to make your life even easier. Once you started the NTP server, you just have to set-up the Mac OS X virtual machine to use your Windows 8 NTP server that is running on your local machine. For VirtualBox, where the virtual machines are accessing the Internet via network address translation (NAT), the host operating system (OS) is located at 10.0.2.2. So on Mac OS X, simply open up "Date & Time" in "System Preferences" and change the NTP server to that address. Now, Mac OS X VM will always sync its time with your local NTP server on boot.
