VirtualBox Hackintosh - Set Up the Correct Partition Size the First Time

After installing Mac OS X 10.8.1 (Mountain Lion) as a VirtualBox guest, I installed all the programs I needed and configured it the way I like it. Then I found out that the 20GB storage I had allocated to it is too small.

At first, I thought that's no big deal, because I have increased the size of the VDI on the Ubuntu 12.10 guest with GParted before. Should be the same with MacOS X and Disk Utility. So I proceeded to use this following VirtualBox command to increase the Mac OS X VDI:

  VBoxManage modifyhd [STORAGE].vdi --resize [SIZE_IN_MB]

VirtualBox expanded the VDI file easily. Next, I booted up the Mac virtual machine and started Disk Utility. I used the Disk Utility to expand the partition size and clicked "Apply". Disk Utility attempted to do its magic on the virtual drive. But when it's done, the partition size didn't change!

I proceeded to try it several more time, each time failing. I even booted up the installation medium and try it from there, but fails. In the end, I was forced to start over with a new VM and allocate a much bigger VDI. The VirtualBox recommended size is way too small. Even my 20 GB allocation is too small. My new installation has 50 GB. But now I'm thinking maybe 100 GB is safer.

Title: VirtualBox Hackintosh with iATKOS ML2

Excerpt: Ever since getting the Asus G46VW-BSI5N06 gaming ultrabook, I've been toying with the idea of triple booting Windows 8, Ubuntu, and Mac OS X Mountain Lion on it. I managed to get the first two operating systems booting (see "Asus G46VW - Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.10 with Pre-Installed Windows 8"). But no . . .
