Awaiting for My XO

My XO has shipped. That's the message I got from Amazon exactly one day I ordered two XO laptops from its "Give one. Get one." program. Of course, I will only get one of the laptops--correction, my one year old daughter will get one of the laptops. The other one is being donated to a child in the emerging world.

The quick shipping notice pleasantly surprised me. When my friend participated in this program last year, his OLPC laptop didn't arrive until months later. So when I participated this year, I didn't expect to get the laptop so soon. Looks like I'll have it before Friday.

I should have participated in this program last year. After my baby daughter dumped juice down the keyboard of my MSi Wind U100 netbook, I realized that the XO laptop is the notebook for her. It has a water-resistant membrane keyboard that should protect the notebook from her exploring nature.

I'm really excited to experiment with Nicholas Negroponte's ideology first hand--I am going to see if a children laptop will accelerate my daughter's learning. I'll be looking at what Open Source software running on Sugar is best suited for my baby daughter at 1-1/2 years old, 2 years old, 3 years old and so on. Next year, when my baby son is one year old, I will get him a XO laptop through the G1G1 program as well (if they bring it back). And I will post my experiences with my children and the XO laptops on this site. If you have any children software suggestions for XO, please post here.

Oh. I don't know. I just know I paid for one to be shipped overseas and one to be delivered to my house. How do I find out if I get T-Mobile access?

I don't know if you will be getting it. It was part of the offer last year. If there is no mention of it, then it isn't part of this year's deal...

Oh ok. Thanks. I don't really know. I haven't read the offer thoroughly. Just have decided to do it. I have gotten the XO today. Will post photos and my thoughts on it soon.

Weblog: GearHack

I decided to replace my Windows server with it, since that's what I've been thinking about ever since I measure the laptop to run a . . .

Title: Keyboard Skin is a Necessity on a Children Netbook
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: In my "Awaiting for My XO" article, I mentioned that the OLPC XO has a water-resistant membrane keyboard, which is perfect for kids who might dump juice on their computer. (I learned the hard way with my daughter dumping juice on my brand new netbook two years ago.) But it's not always possible to b . . .
