Using a Thicker Notebook Drive in the Intermec Norand Pen*Key 6642

I've been taking the Intermec Norand Pen*Key 6642 tablet computer apart a lot lately, because I want to see how I can upgrade it. I've already max out the memory on it (see my post elsewhere on this site). Now I want to put a bigger hard drive in it. The problem is that Intermec Norand 6642 ships with a 8.5mm hard drive. The more popular 9.5mm hard drive wouldn't fit in it. And at this time, I can't find any places that seel 8.5mm notebook hard drives.

Almost ready to give up the idea, I noticed that there is a rubber strip on the rear chassis (see photo below), where the hard drive would sit. I assume that the rubber strip is for damping the hard drive. Now, if I remove that strip of rubber, it's quite likely that I can fit a 9.5mm drive in the tablet computer.

After a minute of pulling and tugging, the rubber strip finally came out. And a test fit of the chassis seems to indicate it will screw together without any gaps.

After doing the test fit, I started peeling off the rubber strip on the hard drive mounting bracket (see below). The hard drive mounting bracket is made for 8.5mm drive, but it works ok with a 9.5mm drive. After putting the case together, it seems to be a perfect fit.
