Rio Carbon UPGRADER problem

Hi. I have a Rio Carbon 5 Gb mp3 player.
The player worked properly since last week.
Now when I swich on appear the Rio logo and after writes UPGRADER.
If I put to charge it`s doesn`t charging.
I tried the emergency reset but it`s doesn`t worked.
I reed the pdf file at the Rio homepage then I tried to put up a newer firmware, but it doesn`t worked, and I can`t format it, because my sistem see the player if I plug in but cant enter it, I can` t enter to the hard drive.
Please somebody help me.

Got the upgrader message? Computer doesn't recognize your player? Can't update the firmware?

I had all of these problems and the only way I could fix it was to revert to an older firmware no longer posted on the Rio site.

A year later and i have the same problem, though i see no one has entered any inkling of a solution.
To further explain the problem i am faced with: i can hear a clicking noise from within the rio, which makes me suspect its a hardware problem, nameley the hard drive. the thing is that i've never dropped it so it seems odd that it would just crap out on me.... idk what's goin on and rio certainly isn't any help, just to have them look at it would cost me 20 bucks, not to mention whatever extra costs there would be for parts and labor. Screw it, i'm getting a new mp3 player.

Try looking at the forums at www.riovolution.com for solutions to this problem and the latest firmware for CARBON with broken scroll wheel.

My Carbon recently started giving me the same problems. It just turned off a lot until suddenly it gave up the ghost completely and decided to give me the upgrader treatment. I tried to install the latest firmware on one computer and the same thing andreas described happened. I tried another computer and it worked perfectly. That was last night. unfortunately this morning it suddenly decided to jettison it's firmware again so i have more upgrader mode to endure. :-(

I'm gonna try the 122 firmware version soon. thanks.

I have the same first problem which is the upgrader on the screen. so after I download the older firmware what do i do?

Hi, just found the same problem on my Rio Carbon: Upgrader message and no charging.
I worked at harddisk production some years ago and know about stiction: The head in the hardisk is "glued" to the disk and needs some extra force to get away from the surface of the disk: Pushing the player onto the table when he tries to start (hear the cheeping sound holding the player to your ear - this is when the harddisk tries to start) but leave the table unbroken, drop the player SMOOTHLY onto the table a few times. The same may appear in your PC: Harddisk makes cheeping noise when starting - just open the case and drop a screwdriver SLIGHTLY on the harddisk to loosen the head.
My Carbon is charging now, no more upgrader message. Have Fun!

I just had the 'upgrader' message. I actually tapped it a few times to no avail so dropped it 1 meter onto the carpet and it started up fine.

Thanks! Was able to resuscitate my old Rio Carbon after years of it sitting in the junk drawer due to that "upgrader" message. I dropped it a few time on a flat surface and flashed with the old software. Up and running! I know I tried this before and it failed, maybe it did need a jolt to get moving again.
