copying small paper and receipts in your home FAX machine

One of the nuisances of using a home FAX machine is that it is always difficult or impossible to copy little pieces of paper, such as UPC or a receipt. The sheet feeding mechanism isn't smart enough to see small sheets of paper. And even if you manage to get it to see it, feeding it through the FAX machine is challenging. Many times, it stops and thinks there is a paper jam.

A trick I learned is to take a paper sheet protector, which you can buy from any office supplies store, and hack off the three-hole-punched edge. You can easily cut it off with a pair of scissors. The modified sheet protector should be barely bigger than an 8-1/2" x 11" piece of paper.

Then insert a clean white sheet of paper in the sheet protector. The white paper will trick the FAX machine's optical paper sensor. This will serve as the carrier for your FAX machine. Now insert your tiny pieces of paper into the sheet protector. It will carry them through during the copying or FAXing process.

The sheet protector with the white sheet of paper is thicker than a single sheet of paper. The FAX machine might have slight trouble with it. Help push it through the sheet feeder on the machine at the start. Once the FAX machine rollers gotten a good grip of it, it will feed through just fine.
