The Result of Banks Being Hacked...

Chase and several banks got hacked last week. Everyone is pointing fingers at Russian hackers and scratching their heads. Banks and FBI claims that our passwords are safe, but the hackers probably have much more sophisticated plans. I have almost became a victim of this hack this past Labor Day weekend.

While driving down to Newport Beach, my personal cellphone received a voicemail from Chase bank. It claimed that my World MasterCard is on temporary hold due to fraud. It gave me a phone number to call. I was busy at the beach, so I ignored it.

When I got to the hotel room, late at night, I logged into my bank account online. No alerts showed up. Activities looked normal. I called Chase using the number on the back of the card, NOT the one in the voicemail.

Chase did not put a hold on my credit card. There was no suspicious activities. They did not call me. So the voicemail I received was not from Chase at all.

Analyzing the situation further, I never gave Chase my personal cellphone number. So the hacks has gotten some information from Chase, such as my name and the type of my credit card. Then they associated the information to other data they had, such as my personal number. Then they attempted a sophisticated phishing attempt.

Be careful when you receive calls regarding your financial account. Always hang up and call them on a phone number that you know is good. That would be the number on the back of your credit card, rather than one left on your voicemail.

The "hack" uses a 855 number. It seems to me that 855 number is in the system, which FBI or other law enforcement agencies can easily put a stop to...

I was curious, so I searched for "1-855-956-0445" on the Internet. It turned out that this phone number had been used phishing in the past.

It is really astonishing to me what kine of unscrupulous telemarketer would work for an operation like this one. And it's even more intriguing why FBI hasn't shut this kind of operation down.
