Battlefield Series is the Training Ground for PlanetSide 2

Reading the PlanetSide 2 forums, it's apparent that PlanetSide 2 has a huge learning curve. After all, what FPS games require a squad of ten, a platoon of three squads, and an outfit of platoons? But that reminds me of the tedious hours our premade team spent in the Battlefield games. Starting with Battlefield 1942 to Battlefield 2 to Battlefield 2142 to Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to Battlefield 3. Each of these Battlefield games requires more and more teamwork to turn the tide on the enemy team.

Our best success story was in Battlefield: Bad Company 2, where a 4-man squad or two of low level players can turn the tide on level 50 enemies after 2 to 3 rounds of slaughter. I remember one game where a level 50 enemy combatant carried the enemy team for two rounds. He had gotten so cocky that he called "GG" (good game) in the middle of the third round. Our premade managed to get a hold of a tank. Two of us started to use the tank as a gunner and cannon operator pair. The rest of our squad protected the tank. We shot down every enemy unit that came within range, including the cock enemy combatant, turning the game to our favor. All of a sudden, a few minutes before the round was over, we saw the cocky combatant say in chat, "This !@#$%^& map!" He logs off the next second. Our premade laughs our *** off because it was the same map where s/he dominated two previous rounds.

It is unforgettable memories like that, which makes me realized that how important a positive and constructive teamwork is in many situations. And we experienced such a success in PlanetSide 2 beta last night, when we played PlanetSide 2 for the first time. Let me emphasize... THE FIRST TIME. I've detailed our successful remote night mission adventure in the "PlanetSide 2: Teamwork Wins!" thread, so I won't go into it here. But the game mechanics between the science fiction PlanetSide 2 and modern warfare Battlefield games are so similar that our premade squad is immediately effective in PlanetSide. It is a pleasant surprise for us that the hours we spent training to work as a team in a tactical shooters hasn't gone to waste.

The biggest complaint for new tactical FPS gamers that come onboard PlanetSide 2 is that they don't know what to do. And honestly, I agree with most of them that SOE hasn't provided enough training, guides, or demonstration on how to be an elite soldier. But the best advice I can give is that the Battlefield series has years of history with hundreds of guides and discussion on how to be successful. Use these for PlanetSide 2. Or pick up a copy of Battlefield and learn to play as a team.

Too busy to get trained that way? Here is a more direct and easier method for newbies. Start playing PlanetSide 2 with a support class, such as an engineer or a medic. Put the assault classes out of your mind. Don't even think of using a MAX. Get on a squad and put your gun away. Don't shoot anything or anyone for a week. Support your squad with your other skills. After a week, I guarantee that you will have learned the ropes of becoming an effective elite soldier. Because by then, you'd have learned the power of working as a team, the value of capturing obectives versus killing an enemy combatant, and how to position yourself with respect to the weakness of your squad.

Newbies will read my previous paragraph and wonder what the heck I'm smoking. Of course, they will want to carry the biggest gun and get the most kills the instance they spawn. They will run out there in the open looking for enemy infantries to shoot. But most likely, they will just find enemy aircrafts picking them off. And they will wonder why their big guns does no damage to the aircrafts. Then they will spawn with rocket launchers to shoot the aircrafts only to find enemy sniper picking them off one at a time. Best of luck to these newbies. I have been there before and I know what it feels like to be all on my own.
