Neverwinter Nights 2 Toolset Crashes on Vista

Neverwinter Nights 2 had been sitting on my pile of games for the past year, unopened. The seal was still intact. But I finally decided to install it last night.

Being in love with the original Neverwinter Nights, I was afraid that the sequel will disappoint me. But after getting to the Bandit Camp in the campaign, I gotta say it's a lot of fun to play.

But the Bandit Camp was tough. The designer of the campaign purposely set it up so that you'd grab your tail and run from the bandit swarm. But I had a better idea. I thought I'd build the Matrix Loading Module, much like I had done in the original Neverwinter Nights: Matrix Loading Module. I wanted to experiment and see whether the bandit swarm was more powerful than unlimited gold pieces or not.

When I loaded up the NWN2 Toolset, I got the "Neverwinter Nights 2 Toolset has stopped working" error message (see screen shot below). Looking at the problem details, I noticed that it crashed on "System.IO.FileNotFoundException". That's weird.

However, I remember when I installed the game, it had an error message at the end of installation. Yet, the game still worked. Searching around a bit, I found this useful thread: Problem with the Toolset and Vista 32bit .... It recommended that I re-install DirectX from the DVD; just run "DXSETUP.exe" in the "DirectX" directory on the DVD.

After installing the DirectX drivers, NWN2 Toolset loaded without any problems. Now I'm off to build the NWN2 Matrix Loading Module.

Try running with xp compatibility with visuals off, when it starts do (ctrl, shift, esc) and change number of cores to one.

If none of that helps just another reason why Nvidia sucks ha ha ha ha ha

Title: Getting Started on Making a NWN2 Module
Weblog: Eversummer Days
Excerpt: While playing the Neverwinter Nights 2 campaign, I had the urge to build the Matrix Loading Module for it. I thought it was going to be a ten minute job, because I was already familiar with the Neverwinter Nights Toolset. But it turned out that the NWN2 Toolset was quite different than the NWN Tools . . .
