PlanetSide 2: ACE MANA Turret Requires Manual Operator

While exploring the engineer class in PlanetSide 2, I noticed that it is able to deploy a MANA Turret using the Advanced Construction Engine. At first, I thought it would be like an automated sentry unit like the turret found in Battlefield 2142. But after deploying it, it is apparent that it must be manned. And sadly, not everyone can man it; only the engineer that deployed it can operate it.

So far, I haven't found a good use for it. Every time I deploy it and get on it, I get shot or blown up a few seconds later. It's just such a large target. And it's glowing red energy shield call out to the world to fire upon it.

Anyone got any tips or tricks on manning the turret? Or is this just a wasted gimmick in PlanetSide 2?

don't stick it somewhere where snipers and rocket launchers have a clear shot at you, use it in more confined spaces (such as guarding indoor generators) or for covering your squad mates backs when they are sniping/rocketing on a hill or from a building. At least, that's how I use them, drop down an ammo pack and sit on your turret supporting/defending your squads position.

And look out for grenades, get off the turret and run if someone lobs one at you!

Thanks for the tip, K. I will try that tonight when I get on PlanetSide 2.

After playing PlanetSide 2 some more and using the turret in various situations, I finally have a success story to report.

At an amp station, I was killed and separated from my squad. I spawned at the Sunderer and ran into the amp station entry way. With the wall behind me, I spotted six enemy combatants next to a building on the other side of the amp station. No other friendlies were near me. 1v6 is for sure a death wish. I spammed 'q' and identified all six enemies. The enemies hasn't spotted me yet. I put down a turret and started suppression fire. The enemies panicked and ran into building for cover. I was able to trade occasional hits with the six enemies, but couldn't kill anyone. They also couldn't kill me while under my long distance suppression fire. I spammed 'q' while firing for what feels like an eternity.

Finally, my squad members from the far left side of the amp station made their way to the enemy position. They flanked from the left side. Because the enemies were distracted from my suppression fire, they took out the enemies quickly with zero casualty. I even managed to get two kills in the process. Now I have much more faith with the engineer turret.

At this time, I like to share some other successful turret techniques I found in the "Alternate uses for the Mana Turret" thread:

"if I couch behind my Mana Turret and pop tart a little, I get killed a lot less and deal quite a bit more damage. And at no time do I actually *use* the silly little thing. So far it's a win-win; deployable cover" - Cookie Fingers

"When I repair a wall turret I used to drop a mana turret behind me during base seiges. That little shield saved my *** a few times from those sneaky guys who came up behind me, never saw anyone else do it though." - LuckyPSD

"they have better range then the carbine. oh and if you are using one and a sniper is trying to kill you you can turn just a little and watch shot after shot hit the shield (its got to **** them off)" - silverme

"Stepping stones. Yes, you can place one and then jump on top for a leg up." - FA_Q2

"I use it as a scare tactic sometimes. I set up my turret where it's just visible from the alternate entry way, and focus more on the main way. So many wasted grenades and pre-fires have been dealt with because of a decoy." - Daejin

"The best use I found is press "B" (alt fire mode button) while holding the turret deployable and converting it to a second ammo box so I can actually have 2 ammo boxes at the same time." - Masteroft

"you know when you shoot your freindy mana turret and a big cross goes thru your aimer and a loud ping.
well thats why i always hide behind enemy mana turrets, cause when they shoot me that distracts them and i always get the kill." - xTEExGOWx

"I've used my turret as a sniper decoy several times. Deploy on the edge of a flight platform, watch for the inevitable sniper shots trying to aim for the gap in the shield, follow trails back to source, profit." - Tatanka

Actually, I deploy where people can hit you, & don't man it (or for long). I usually build it for cover; decent if you crouch [CTRL] behind it. & you get fixing certs when it does get hit.

Also good for as a scope to help spot incoming; I've got a number of spot-assists from it.

Title: PlanetSide 2: Engineer has Two Ammo Packs
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: Did you know that the engineer has two ammo packs to drop on the ground? I didn't know that until I read about them in the forums. One of the ammo pack is the one equipped in your weapon slot. The other ammo pack is part of your ACE tool. When you bring up the ACE, instead of putting down a turret, . . .
