Steam backup does not run from CD

I have a full suite of Valve Steam games--Codename Gordon, Counter-Strike Source, Day of Defeat, Half-Life 2, Ricochet, etc.--on my computer. It took me a while to download them all over the network through the Steam game distribution system. So I didn't want to lose them in case of a hard drive crash. I have everything backed up onto three DVD's. After backing them up to DVD, I tested the backup files by double-clicking on each backup executable. To my surprise, I got the following "Assertion failed!" message.

I was quite disappointed and upset that none of the backup worked. Today, I tried it again. But this time, I copied one of the smaller backup files onto the hard disk. When I ran the backup executable it worked! It looks like the backup executables can't run from CD. Perhaps they need to write to temporary storage.

Valve Steam could have been more explicit in the error message. Or perhaps it should use the C: drive as the temporary storage.

I received that same error, and I was worried that I'd have to try debugging in Visual C++! This worked great! Thank you!

if you click ignore, it continues on anyways, and it downloads the missing file almost instantaneously anyways.

After you install Steam, make sure you login to your account and then close steam before you restore the file. I received this exact error whenever I tried to restore a backup. I opened Steam, put in my account information so I could log in. Afterwards my backup restored successfully without any errors. Running as administrator may help, also.

This may be a security feature, because they may not want you to distribute the game to a computer that does not have a SteamID set up.
