Unimpressed with Call of Duty: Black Ops

This weekend, Steam provided a free trial of Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer. So I installed it and gave it a try.

After all, I am a big fan of modern tactical first person shooters. I have played Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare before and am currently playing Battlefield: Bad Company 2.

But after five minutes of it in Combat Training mode with bots, I was very disappointed with Call of Duty: Black Ops. As soon as I entered the round, the resemblance to CoD4 smacked me right in the face. The controls and guns felt practically the same. The graphics was no better (in fact, after loading up CoD4 later, I found the CoD4 graphics to be better on my computer). The experience made me wonder why anyone would switch over to CoD: Black Ops.

The new things are the maps, the way perks are being distributed, some new ways of killing enemies after reaching a certain streak. But nothing really innovating compared to CoD4. After three generations of CoD development after CoD4, you'd think they'd come up with something more revolutionary.

But they didn't. No destructive buildings. No way to help each other--your team mates--out. You still run around in circles on a map. There is very little tactical advantages of staying and fortifying one area of the map; much like previous generations of CoD.

There is no reason to "upgrade" to Black Ops, where CoD4 would suffice. In fact, with Black Ops, I'd have to start over with the unlocks, while I've unlocked everything in CoD4. While some folks find it entertaining and fun to unlock, it's work, it's farming, and it's an artificial challenge created by the game developers. For me, the game starts when everything is unlocked and I can unleashed the full potential of my character to fight the tactical battle.

In a way, I'm glad that the developer of CoDBO kept the game very similar to CoD4, because it give me no excuse to spend another $40 to play it. I can keep the money in the bank, waiting for a game that is a worthy contender.
