Windows 7 is a Good Candidate for Children's Netbook

Microsoft is finally paying attention to the children's segment for its most popular operating system. First, it started a public commerical campaign where young children is portraited to use Windows for fun tasks (like improving a photograph). Then on it's most recent Windows 7 operating system, Microsoft bundled a children game called "Purble Place". It actually contained three games: 1) Comfy Cakes; 2) Purble Shop; 3) Purble Pairs.

In Comfy Cakes, the child has to recreate a cake that is matching an order. The process starts by selecting the right pan shape. Next the child is to select the right cake flavor. In the third step, the child will select the correct icing color. In the final step, the child will select the correct decloration. If everything matches, then the cake is accepted and a reward is given. Any unsuccessful attempt restarts the process.

In Purble Shop, a character is hiding behind the curtain in a shop. The child is to guess the facial features--eyes, nose, and mouth--of the character. There are three choices for each feature for a total of nine selections. After each guess, the program shows the child the correct guesses and allow the child to make changes to the next guess; similar tot the Mastermind board game. The game continues until the child correctly guess the hidden character.

Purble Pairs is basically memory game, where the child has to match two cards to make a pair. The cards are laid out face down in a five by five square. That makes 25 cards all together, which seems to indicate that there is an odd card. Unlike other memory games, Purble Pair introduces a single Joker card. When you flip the Joker card over, it automatically makes a match for you, therefore eliminate the odd card.

These games are fun and entertaining, without the stressful time limitation or penalty for failure. They seem to be suitable for kids fives years old and under.
