draw your own crosshair in first-person shooters

I have always been a fan of modern tactical first-person shooter games. Lately, my favorite is the Counter-Strike: Source that came with Half-Life 2. One of my favorite weapons in any FPS game is the sniper rifle. With the sniper rifle, you can pick off you enemies from long distance even if they have you in sight. Trouble is that the snipe rifle is a relatively slow firing weapon and it is fairly inaccurate without the scope. The sniper rifle is fairly useless in medium and short distance fire-fights; although I have successfully won 1-to-1 fire-fights on occasions. Counter-Strike: Source made the snipe rifle even worse in fire-fights by eliminating the crosshair when scope is not in use. In this article, I will show you a simple trick that will improve sniper rifle accuracy by 1000% without the use of a scope. With this trick a sniper will actually have a chance in short distance fire-fights in any FPS game that doesn't have a crosshair.

The loophole is introduced by the Counter-Strike: Source development team when they decided not to provide the crosshair for sniper rifles. They decided that the inaccuracy in our human eyes without a scope is sufficient to simulate a realistic sniper rifle. So they implemented sniper rifle accuracy at the center of the screen with or without a scope.

For days, I tried to remember where is the center of the screen. But with all the motion and the split-second decisions, I was only successful twice as often--a 100% improvement-- as before I attempted to remember the center. Lost night I got smart. I thought, "Use a Sharpie!"

I have a bunch of Sharpie permanent markers on my desk for writing on CD surfaces. I took a Sharpie from my desk, put the sniper scope on the screen, and marked the center of the glass CRT screen with a dot (see picture below).

When you mark your crosshair, be sure to look at the screen surface as a perpendicular plane. The monitor glass has a thickness that must be accounted for. The glass is quite thick on my Dell Trinitron monitor, so if you don't look at the screen in direct perpendicular, the mark would be off.

Now, even if you mark the center of the screen at perpendicular, it's most likely that your normal seating position doesn't put BOTH of your eyes at the center of the screen. So the perpendicular center is going to be slightly off. I generally sit slight above and to the left of the screen center when I play FPS games. So I also marked the crosshair from where I normally sit (see picture below). Generally, the actual crosshair is between these two points as I shift around on my chair.

With this trick, my fire-fight kills with a sniper rifle increased tremendously. I would think it's on the scale of 1000%, basically 10 times better than before!

Erasing the Mark

The Sharpie marker ink is permanent so you can't remove it from the glass even if you rub it with your fingers. This makes the crosshair robust and maintenance free for years to come. But what if you really want to remove it?

I learned this trick from Sasha a few years ago (see "Make Your Own Clear Board" elsewhere on this site), which spun this idea. The Sharpie permanent marker ink really isn't permanent at all on smooth surfaces. The ink dries on the surface, rather than seeping in. You can easily remove the marking with rubbing alcohol. Take a piece of cotton ball or paper towel, dab a little bit of rubbing alcohol, and watch the permanent ink vanish magically.

Liquid Crystal Display

Will this trick work on LCD? I don't know. The LCD has a smooth surface, but seems rather soft. I am not sure if it is a breathable membrane. If so, the ink would seep through. But if the LCD surface is just a soft smooth plastic, then the Sharpie marker would work fine on its surface. If you have any experience with LCD surface or have tried this trick with your LCD, feel free to fill us in.

Is This Trick a Cheat?

This trick is undetectable by any anti-cheat system. Of course, I'm not even sure if it can be considered as a cheat. Because it is obvious that the Counter-Strike: Source developers intended for the sniper rifle to be accurate at the center of the screen. Now the center is marked.

It's kind of like the rally car drivers mark the center of the steering wheel. You don't have to mark it and there is no rule against marking it. But you better mark it if you want to have a chance against the world's best rally drivers.

I'm sure long-time sniper players have already figured out this trick. Perhaps with tape or other sticky. Hey, I've only been playing Counter-Strike: Source for two weeks.

Plus, anyone who think that using this trick will make your sniper a god in a fire-fight is naive. During a close quarter fire fight, any automatic weapon will have a 3:1 chance of beating a sniper rifle, even if you managed to get yourself a semi-automatic sniper rifle. This trick only improves a sniper's survival chance when caught in a close-quarter fire-fight.

A Better Sniper Rifle Implementation

So how could the Counter-Strike: Source developers make the sniper rifle more realistic?

Implement the sniper rifle in the same way as developers have done in Ubi Rainbow Six: Raven Shield. In that game, each weapon has a different accuracy. The crosshair shows a circle of accuracy with its center spacing. When you walk or run the crosshair center spacing increases in size, which shows you that your shots could fly anywhere in that space. When you stop, the center space decreases gradually at a rate based on the heaviness of the weapon and various other factors. For the sniper rifle, the crosshair is always on the screen. When the scope is not in use, the center spacing is huge compare to other weapons. When the scope is use, the center spacing is extremely small compared to any other weapon, even for long distance target.

Either that or plastic wrap the screen like the did on the Muppet Babies.

That's what I have been telling everybody. Rainbow Six 3: Raven shield developed the best weapon system of any fps ever. All the new games that come out are beautiful, visually, but none of them come close to the beauty of the Raven Shield weapon system, with its crosshairs.

What kind of boob would do this to their display? Get some transparencies, cut to the appropriate size, draw your grid, place over display. You probably don't even need to tape it down, most bezels would hold it in place if you cut it to the right size.

CJU
Tue, 3 Jan 2006 22:31:27 -0800

This is an old trick that dates back to when they first removed the crosshairs. The AWP is much less accurate when unscoped, so this isn't as effective as you think. If anything, it's useful for lining up your shot before you zoom in, or finding the exact center of your crosshairs for other weapons.

The last paragraph is baffling, because, uh, CS:S has all those things. Maybe you have reactive crosshair turned off? The original CS and the first Rainbow Six came out at practically the same time and they both pioneered this method of "realism".

Also, there are windows programs that will draw an always-on-top crosshair on your screen that can be used for any game. And you don't have to ruin your monitor to do it.

Hes creative. Much more creative than spending 80hrs a week playing CS to "get skillz" for a video game that will have a 2 year life max. The working class thrives on ignoramuses like yourselves because you can do a mindless repetitive task over and over. Welcome to the world of ingenuity. Tip for life: On a resume "creative problem solver" will get you a job, "Diligent 80hr gamer" will not.

Since you only got source, your a fucking noob. Learn to actualy play the game. A better way is to switch pistol to sniper really fast, giving you a blink of where the crosshair is. Either that. Or just pull out your USP/Deagle. You cant be THAT stupid not to buy a pistol, right?

There's a very easy way to remove permanent marker from a flat surface like this. It has to do with the chemical makeup of permanent markers and of dry-erase markers, I'm not sure but I've had to do this in college to get rid of permanent markers on mirrors.

First, get a dry-erase marker and a dry erase eraser. Next cover the permanent marker in dry-erase marker, so every inch of the permanent marker is filled. Let it dry so the chemicals can rest on each other. Then VIOLA, the dry-erase takes the permanent marker right off.

The best thing you should do is to use a razor blade. Forget the sharpie or dry marker...

The razor blade will give you a more precise marking. It works very well on LCD screens. For CRT's, you may need to use the sharp end of a nail filer.

I left them on here for people can read through this thread and see what kind of people are out there in this world. Plus, I don't mind them speaking out and giving me a piece of their mind. But this latest one is, at least, math and I hate to see youngsters who can't do math.

So I'm gonna give the previous poster a quick what-are-you-smoking piece of my mind. Perhaps, those of you that are not so in tune with math will learn at least one thing from this article. And that lesson is simple:

1000% = 10 times

Read any stock report. Since many of you young gamers aren't in the financial world yet, I'll give you an example that even you young folks can understand. For example, Google's stock has gone up 500% since IPO. It means Google's stock share price has gone up by 5x.

Good concept man, not sure if it would work on most games but the idea is still good.

Just thought i might say that all those people who have said "Learn how to play" etc etc probably came across this article looking for ways to hack games and cheat anyway so your all really just a bunch of hypocrites....

People who think outside the square instead of staying in it will get further in life, take a hacker for example, they beat everybody at the game because they have thought outside the square. (Saying that tho I have more respect for people who can create the hack and use it then for people who download it and use it.) Its the same in life guys. start thinking outside the square. The more you do it will make game creators have to work hard and design a good product that has real life playability.

Less repetition more revelation!

you have a good point about it not being a cheat. My friend from school and I did that trick along time ago on America's Army, except we used a spit ball rather then a marker.

tc:e (wolf:et mod) has no crosshairs and when you shoot, it does not go to the middle of your screen, Instead it goes with wepaon sway (its pretty random).

Vavle (or whom ever created cs:s) easly could of prevented this sharpie trick the same way, but they didn't. therefor it is not a cheat. Exploit, maybe, but not a cheat.

XxArcherXx
Fri, 18 May 2007 21:24:13 -0700

Woah, I hate CS now so it doesent really matter. As you all may not know its is VERY diffuicult to aim a gun in real life not using the weapon sights. Either scope or iron sights. There is no floating crosshairs in real life BTW, so Rainbow Six is not considered 'realistic' since you can use magic floating dots that help you aim.

As for the trick, its much easier to use tape if you have a lcd. The type of tape I use is the bookmark tape and draw a croshair on it. Bookmark tape is easy because theres a little part thats not sticky and can be easily pulled off with no damage to your screen.

If Y + 1 <> center_y And Y - 1 <> center_y Then _

You didn't think this one through very well: It works for the scout, but not the awp. Because the awp is so powerful, they made sure that it's very inaccurate when you're not in scope mode. Test it out for yourself against a wall sometime.

I stuck a tiny ball of paper to the center of my screen when I was more of a noob, and it was pretty fun to noscope everyone. Regardless of VAC, though, you can get caught by server admins if they think you're noscoping too well. They'll bust you for hacking after speccing you for a while, I suspect.

I've been playing cs since 1.3 started and it is an old trick i still do it.... i would say myself have really tested it and it wont work on no scopes, but tis accurate once you quick scpoes for AWP's, and it is accurate to get more headshots... but once you get pro you'll get bann from most servers because of this... this was my trick all throughout and thanks for sharing it to evryone... play hard... see ya'll at CAL

Thanks! this hack really works! I can't believe it's so undetectable.

I even used it on the original doom recently, because that doesn't have a crosshair, it improved my game sooo much!

I used a pigment liner on my LCD monitor and it worked just fine.

ooh! Kinda funny all these people telling you to learn some skills. Can't help but wonder what they were looking for when they came to a website telling them how to put a crosshair on games where a weapon doesn't have one. :D

Maybe they were just looking for links to get away from this page, amirite? 8D

I know this is probably a dead topic, but better than on your screen, use iPod protector plastic and put the dot on that. Works great. There's also a guy who sells these things at Supplycrate.com. He has two types (Crosshair or dot) and they come in either red or black. I assure you I get nothing for telling you this. They are only about five bucks for fifteen, but I went back to the ipod protector film it's easier to apply and doesn't really gook up your screen.

All you'd have to do is mark an "X" on the center at about half an inch with the Sharpie, and that's it. Just mark it in the same spot as the cross-hair when you zoomed in. Also, "X" is better than a dot. And using the protector...? C'mon, it just takes one tiny dip of rubbing alcohol to remove it, and the size of the "X" shouldn't be that obstructive to the view.

If you read the full article, then you'd realized that sharpie really isn't permanent.

While it is true that a lot of online gamers' decorum leaves much to be desired, there are those of us who can claim some pretense of intelligence. Also, it bears mentioning that while much of improving is down to simple practice, repetition alone will not suffice for the higher levels of skill. Take high-level LAN tournaments for example - there is a lot of "creative problem solving" that goes on in regards to the strategies and mindgames employed. It's just too bad that a lot of gamers are too inarticulate to express the mental processes that occur.

As far as this 'trick' is concerned: one of my clanmates did a similar thing in CoD4, and had some hilarious noscopes because of it. Still, it's likely to be of limited effectiveness, and if you did go to LAN I doubt it'd be allowed.

I found this link after playing Crysis 2 Multiplayer and suddenly realized I want my shotgun to have a proper crosshair and not the same size as my faking monitor. Respect to the original poster for the information provided but a little bit extreme. Most of the comments though had nailed it perfect. 2 strings across monitor, bluetac, a bogey from your nose :), all good suggestions. The best of course is not physical but software called Ultimate Crosshair by Erazer ( http://www.ucdownloads.com/downloads/downloads.php?do=file&i . . . ) the only disadvantage is you need to press Alt+Enter and play your games in window mode. If somebody can remake this simple program in the same complicated manner as Fraps, which displays frames per second overlay during full screen gaming, that will be awesome!

yea sharpie comes right off anyway, just using your finger, so water, or alchohol, jsut rub it way, use it for gmod on servers that dont give you a crosshair making it difficult to build

Put a piece of notebook paper on screen. Mark your dot on paper. Do this with out marking thru paper and without scratching screen with paper. Now put a lil black piece of electrical tape on a lil paper. Now put your marked dot paper over tape paper securely, and cut dot out with razor. Dont do this near the screen, and dont cut yourself. Now put your black dot on the screen where it needs to go. Some games u may need to take a practice shot to an object at a short distance to achieve this.
