GIMP Not Responding When Closed

Running CentOS 5.5 on a quad-core processor machine. GIMP version 2.2.13. Whenever I close GIMP, it always shows the not responding dialog box and plays an annoying sound (see screen shot below). If I just wait or click "Keep Running" it will eventually close after a few seconds. Why does GIMP respond so slowly on this fast machine?

Think I figured out the problem. It seems that it has something to do with my home directory mounted from a remote computer on the LAN. Today, after moving my home directory to the local computer I'm on, Gimp closes immediately on exit.
