OLPC XO Activities Won't Start

I don't know what happened or what did I break, but the activities on my daughter's OLPC XO will no longer start. Whenever we click on an application, it looks like it's loading, and it loads for a very long time. But when it is done, it goes back to the Sugar launching screen with the stick figure in the middle. The only difference is now the activity we tried to open is under the stick figure. But there is no way to bring the activity up. Anyone seen this kind of problem?

Ok. I've discovered the cause of the problem. It's because I have an EXT3 SD Card mounted upon starting up the OLPC XO. I have not narrowed down to the exact root cause. But booting the OLPC XO without the EXT3 SD Card in the card reader allows activities to be started. The /var/log/messages shows the problem:

Feb 7 05:06:19 localhost kernel: [ 110.173606] kjournald starting. Commit interval 5 seconds
Feb 7 05:06:19 localhost kernel: [ 110.179047] EXT3 FS on mmcblk0p5, internal journal

Feb 7 05:06:35 localhost kernel: [ 125.687105] in libc-2.8.so[b7bfb000+163000]

I suspect it has something to do with the python seg fault shown in the second to last line. This process is missing (segfault) if the SD Card is in the card reader when the system is booted:

olpc 1311 1 4 05:12 ? 00:00:03 python /usr/bin/datastore-service

I don't know what service that is, but looks like it is required for any OLPC XO activity to run.

There is no problem if I format the SD Card to EXT2. It's only EXT3 on the SD Card that causes the segfault. I'm going to switch to EXT2 and avoid the crash.

I've filed a bug with the OLPC development team. Looking forward to their response. The bug is here: http://dev.laptop.org/ticket/10019

Title: Expanding the Storage Space on the OLPC XO
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: The OLPC XO is really a state-of-the-art computer for your children. To provide reliability for a children to carry it around, it has no hard drive. Instead, everything is installed on the 1 GB internal flash. That's not a lot of storage space. Luckily, the designers of the OLPC XO have the fore-sig . . .
