Play Back Any Video Format on the OLPC XO (mplayer)OLPC XO can only play back OGG video and audio files, because it is a completely free and unrestricted format. But the industry is really going a different direction; there are far more FLV, DivX, and MP4 videos. To convert each one into OGG can be done, but it is a tedious process. It'd be much nicer to be able to play these video files directly without a conversion. That's where mplayer comes into the scene. mplayer is a command-line media player that can play more video/audio formats out there. In the past, installing mplayer is possible via the instructions located here: MPlayer. But it's really not an easy process. Recently, I found a ready to install and pre-configured version of mplayer that a OLPC XO enthusiast has created. Installing this mplayer was a piece of cake and played back every video file I could throw at it. And it has really sped up my daughter's education; she no longer had to wait for me to convert all the educational videos. This pre-configured mplayer can be downloaded from this thread: MPlayer working on the XO. Chieh Cheng
