Blank Screen Saver

Recently, I haven't been able to disable the screen saver on Mac OS X. Despite trying a few things, the screen saver always starts when the notebook is inactive for a while. Anyway to reduce distraction and to reduce CPU usage, I've always used a screen saver that blanks the screen (turns the screen black). In fact, I have even written one in the past for OS/2, because it lacks the blank screen saver. Mac OS X is in the same shoes right now, becuase it also doesn't come with a screen saver that blanks the screen. Luckily, on Mac OS X, you can easily work around that with an blank image.

I used Gimp to created a black 1 pixel image (attached belowfor you to download). I then placed this image in its own directory. Next, I configured the Mac OS X screen saver by going to "System Preferences..." -> "Desktop & Screen Saver" -> "Screen Saver". Finally, from the "Screen Savers" list, I picked "Choose Folder...", which lets me select a folder of photos to display as screen saver. I choose the folder with my black 1 pixel image.

This workaround tricks the Mac OS X to display the 1 pixel black image all the time. And all it does it blank the screen when the screen saver turns on. It's much less distracting than all the colorful patterns that shows in the other screen savers. And it doesn't draw attention to my black notebook. Stealthy!

The blank image above is only 1 pixel in size. So it's really hard to click on and download. So here is the link to the image:

Right click on the link to save it to your computer.

Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: Ever since upgrading the Darwin kernel from 9.1.0 to 9.4.0 (see "Memory Card Reader Stopped Working on New MSi Wind U100" TrackBack below), I haven't been able to disable the screen saver in Mac OS X. I have already set the screen saver to "Never" in System Preferences. But yet, it still comes on af . . .
