Run Mac OS X Off USB Drive
I am extremely pleased to report that Mac OS X (10.5.7) boots off an USB hard drive just fine.
The past three months, I've been thinking off running both Mac OS X and Windows XP on my MSi Wind U100 netbook. It's just that there are times when I need Windows XP and other times when I need Mac OS X. I've thought about dual boot the two operating systems off the same internal hard drive. But the installation is a head-ache. And I have to give up hard drive space for the overhead of two OS's.
The beauty is that the MSi Wind U100 netbook can boot off USB, memory card, or its internal hard drive. So I figured that the idea solution is to give each operating system its own hard drive and plug each in as I need them. Windows XP would not boot off an external device without quite a bit of work.
But after many sleepless nights, it occurred to me that maybe Mac OS X could boot off an external device. That hunch paid off as I unplugged the hard drive from my netbook and put it into an USB 2.0 case. And now I'm typing this message using Mac OS X on the external drive.
I've already put another hard drive into the netbook and will be installing Windows 7 on it soon.
