Yup, cool. Any update on your MacWind, guys?

What's ichatav?
I will probably refrain from installing any IM software on my Wind. No offense to the Mac or anything. I do that on my Windows machines as well.

iChat AV

It's apple's IM / audio chat / video chat client.

Is it due to the disruption?

The disruption is a minor reason. It's true that I can do without the disruption.

But I think the major reason is just that I have to install yet another IM software. I have Yahoo IM, ICQ, AIM, MSN. It got overwhelming. And I hate using up my processor power on these idling, misbehaving software on my computer. I also hate the fact that they try to take over your computer, by starting up on boot, and not going away when I want them to. No . . . my processing power is for me, myself, and I, not for some corporation to pump its marketing agenda.

Finally, I started using Trillian, which seems rather nice and compact. It also behaves quite nicely. And I can log onto all four networks all at once.

But as you know me, I no longer use a single computer. I have a bunch of different notebooks and computers. I no longer have a primary computer, because it forces me to sit in one spot. Computers are now my tool, my mean. It's no longer an end. So where ever I am, I have a tool. Maybe it'll be worthwhile to install Trillian on every computer. But as you kindly questioned, is the disruption worth it?

So yah, I'm even less inclined to install iChat AV, because it further locks you into a single non-portable technology. Biggest question is whether I will be able to install iChat AV on any major operating system, which I assume is a 'no'.

I think this is why I was motivated to write "Cirqo". It's a platform-independent chat system without any need to install software. It runs on practically any browser, whether it's a computer, a mobile phone, or anything else. It doesn't lock you into any technology. It's not intrusive, so it doesn't really disrupt you unless you want to be disrupted.

What do you guys think? I noticed that you guys are running various IM software merrily without worry. So what are your routines?

iChat AV is kinda like Trillian, it supports AIM and Jabber (GTalk), but not Yahoo nor MSN. iChat comes with OS X, so it'll be installed already. I use it mainly for video conferencing.

I prefer to use GTalk for text IMs. I am on different computers all the time too, and having the logs centralized and searchable is very nice. IMs can be sent offline, so you don't have to be disrupted either. Google already has my email, they can have my IM logs too. :)

There's also Meebo, which is like a browser based Trillian. The library they use is open source (libpurple).

In the eyes of people using Cirqo other than yourself, it is just as proprietary as all these protocols. But it suits your needs and that's perfectly fine.

Not sure if you're interested in IM'ing people on AIM/Yahoo/MSN/GTalk/Jabber, but if you are, you can add support for all those protocols using libpurple.

I like the idea of GTalk. And it's a step in the right direction for Google. But I don't use it much, because it doesn't work with my phone. And it only works with people on Gmail. People IM me a lot using it, but I noticed it doesn't work well, because I'm not watching my mail account all the time, even though my browser is in Gmail (it's just one of the tabs).

I heard about Meebo. I might give that a try one day. But I'm suspecting with all its JavaScript/AJAX/whatever-other-fancy-stuff-technology it uses, it probably won't work with my phone.

Yes. I thought of the lack of users on Cirqo. It's both a blessing and a curse. It's a blessing, because like you said, IM could be a disruption. Talking to one person is more than enough to keep me occupied. It's a curse, because, obviously, I would like to see people use it.

But that's ok for now, because we haven't actively promote it yet. In fact, we haven't promote it at all. And it wasn't quite ready before. Now, I think it's getting a lot closer to being ready, because I've been happily using it recently without seeing any deficiencies. If you guys see deficiencies, I'd love to hear it and make improvements.

Integrating Cirqo with the other IM protocols out there has always been the goal. Eventually that will happen. And I'm glad you pointed out libpurple. Because that might happen a lot quicker now.

It's just unfortunate that I don't have much time in my life right now to work on it.

That is also one reason why I have refrained from installing Trillian on all of my computers. It motivates me to move forward with Cirqo.

pidgin (uses libpurple) (aka gaim)

connects to everything i want to be connected to. doesn't cost money like trillian. not bloated. missing features, but eh. no one ims me anymore. then again, no one really calls anymore either.

What do you guys means that sound isn't ready yet?
You guys can't get sound on your MSi Wind Hackintosh?
My sound seems to work just fine. It just won't switch the headphone port after you plug in the headphone. Is that what you guys are talking about?

Yes.

Speaker's fine, but the mic doesn't work. You can substitute w/ a Bluetooth headset.

There's a way to enable the headphone with a single key press (F1 on my Wind). See #10 at http://gnowk.pbwiki.com/OSX-on-MSI-Wind
