Dell Mini 12

The Dell Mini 12 is the world's first Inspiron Mini netbook. Reviewers of the netbook believe that the Dell Mini 12 blurs the line between netbook and notebook, and those who have fallen in love with Dell's first netbook rave that it's a cheaper alternative to the coveted MacBook Air. The comparisons with the MacBook Air also have to do with the similar weight and thickness. The Dell Mini 12 weighs under 3 pounds, and and is less than 1.1" thick.

The Dell Mini 12 was designed by Dell and manufactured in Taiwan at the world's second largest laptop producer. The Dell Mini 12 is the younger sibling of the Dell Mini 9, but causes some sibling rivalry between the two computers because the Dell Mini 12 is bigger than its older brother. The keyboard gives more room to users for typing and the bigger screen offers higher resolution and better picture quality for viewing multimedia files.

The larger screen on the netbook is what draws in many purchasers of the Dell Mini 12. The wider screen provides more workspace for applications to be placed side by side and makes toggling between applications easier. The lid of the Dell Mini 12 is a glossy and gorgeous black color. There is a downside to the gloss and beauty, the lid is a fingerprint smudge attractor like dozens of other netbooks currently on the market.

The specs on the Dell Mini 12 are good. The hard disc drive holds 40GB and the screen resolution is 1,280 x 800. The netbook has 1GB of memory, and the processing speed is impressive. The additional perks include a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and the netbook is 3G ready for super browsing. Once the Dell Mini 12 is booted up, it launches the Windows Vista Home Edition system. There are two other optional systems available; Windows XP and Ubuntu.

Two USB ports can be found on the side along with sockets for headphones and microphones. Dell Mini 12 is equipped with a 3-cell battery that Dell rates at 3.5 hours, but computer owners know that the battery life specified by the company is never completely accurate. Realistically, battery life on the Dell Mini 12 lasts for about 2.5 to 3 hours if multiple applications are running. The little brother of the Dell Mini 12, the Dell Mini 9 has a better 4-cell battery. Those who need a longer battery life for their Dell Mini 12 will be pleased with the 6-cell battery option that is offered.

When it comes down to it, the Dell Mini 12 is a good netbook with a larger range of capabilities than other netbooks on the market. The processing speed, Windows operation system, and comfortable size reel in consumers initially, but the price on the netbook is scaring many away. A Dell Mini 12 costs about $800 which makes it one of the most expensive netbooks on the market, but a less powered one will start at $600. If the Dell Mini 12 had been priced cheaper, there is no doubt that the computer would have sold like hot cakes.
