Fixing the Garbled Boot Up Screen on the Averatec 3120V Notebook After Installing Ubuntu 6.06 LTS

This past weekend, I've finally upgraded my Averatec 3120V notebook to Ubuntu 6.06 with long term support (LTS). The installation went smoothly, without any problems. But after rebooting the notebook, the boot up screen is garbled and washed out. I couldn't see what the computer was doing during the boot process. Good thing that the screen returned back to normal at the login screen and that there was no permanent damage to the LCD.

To fix this problem, I modified the /boot/grub/menu.lst file. This file defines boot up parameters for GRUB. The solution is to modify the first occurrance of the following line:

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.15-28-386 root=/dev/hda1 ro quiet splash

For my Averatec 3120V notebook, I appended "vga=791" to the end of that line. This tells GRUB to boot using 1024x768 resolution with 16-bit color. Now the notebook boot up fine and I could read the boot-up progress.
