MSi Wind U100 Second Impression

Last week, I wrote about my first impression with the MSi Wind U100 netbook. That impression was based on a fully decked out MSi Wind U100-279US. But an unfortunate event soon took it out commission. So, I ended up buying the MSi Wind U100-016US, which arrived last night. This second impression article is based on this newer machine, which is almost identical to the first.

- The black version is way more slick than the white version.

- The LED indicators are more colorful against the black netbook.

- It's a little smaller than my old Sony VAIO SuperSlim notebook.

- The standard 3-cell battery is even harder to remove than the extended 6-cell battery.

- The wireless network and Bluetooth is enabled via keyboard, so if the keyboard breaks, a replacement USB keyboard cannot enable wireless network and Bluetooth.

- The wireless network and Bluetooth are automatically disabled after removing power completely (AC and battery).

- It's a little thicker than my old Sony VAIO SuperSlim notebook.

The power to the USB port is always on, even when the netbook is turned off. You can use it to charge a cellphone without wasting CPU cycles. Don't know if this is true on battery power.

The base is so light than when the LCD lid is open, it has a tendency to topple over at the slightest touch.

When the AC adapter is not plugged into the netbook, but the battery is installed, the USB port does not provide power when the netbook is off. However, if the netbook is on and in sleep mode, power is always supplied to the USB port. This is both a blessing and a curse. Users beware.

After using the MSi Wind U100-016US for three months now, here are two more . . .

- The LED's and their symbols are at the right palm rest. They have been pretty much rubbed out after semi-daily use.

- The rubber feet on the lid, by the web cam, are easily accidentally removed during cleaning.

The LED symbols on my laptop is completely gone. But luckily I have a second MSi Wind U100 that is running as a server. I shot a photo of the symbols, which I attached below.
