Recovering Data Off a Dying AcomData E5 HybridDrive
Symptom: Acomdata E5 USB hard drive doesn't spin, soft clicking noise is heard. Powerlight comes up, but appears to be dead.
Solution: took the WD5000AAJB drive out of enclosure, put a jumper on it set it to slave, and remarkably it powered up fine when connected to internal PC power supply and internal drive cables of a standalone PC. Was able to grab all data off of drive.
So either the external power supply for enclosure died, or USB connector/board died. Drive seems fine by itself.
Same thing happened to my E5 with WD2500JB. Tested the power supply with voltmeter and all is fine so the internal board must be faulty. Drive still works but my standalone does not recognize the volume in order to retrieve the info.
Read this "AcomData E5 HybridDrive External Hard Drive Disassembly" article. It explains why you can't read the volume. You'll have to get a replacement board, or a replacement enclosure.
