LiftMaster 3800 Cable Tension Problem

I just installed the Lift Master 3800. I am having a problem with the tension on the cables. When you close the door from a fully open position, it reverses as the tension on the cables is lost. It seems as though the torsion bar is turning faster than the door can fall to keep tension on the cable. When you keep tension on the cable sensor the door works fine. The lost tension is only for a second or two. Lift Master suggested that I use cable keepers. Does this make sense? Will I be defeating the purpose of the cable sensors in the first place?
