Marriage of iPhone and Roomba

These days, all the rage is about apps and the iPhone. But I thought of a good app that might be really cool to have if there are any developer who might want to take up this mantle. A Roomba app that allows you to remotely set timers and where you want it to clean.

Of course, it would take cooperation from Roomba to make one with Wi-Fi card inside it.

While we're at it, why not a webcam as well? Double as a security device as it goes around the room. Add a small LED light so you can see where it is going in dark tight spots and whether the Roomba missed a spot or not.

I am almost certain there are hacks out there with just such a thing.

As far as i can see, there are hacks out there but nothing official from Roomba. I think it would be a great opportunity for Roomba to get folks to upgrade their existing units. Perhaps, they can offer an upgrade kit for a Wi-Fi card and Webcam.

For anyone who is interested, I made an iPhone app that does just this. It is called Roomote (for Roomba remote). You need some extra hardware to make things work (a serial cable or a Bluetooth module for the Roomba plus a server app running on your Mac computer), but it is a fun hack, anyway!
