Wayne Dalton idrive Troubleshooting Tip #2 - Check the Motor Guide Position

If you ever had trouble with your garage door and had to disconnect the cable from the door or had to disconnect the idrive from the torsion bar, then you might bang your head on the wall because the door won't move or only moves part of the way and get stuck. What had happened was that you've disconnected the idrive from the garage door at some point of the troubleshooting or fix. After you had put everything back, the idrive "remembered" where the door was disconnected, but not where the door was after you reassembled everything. The idrive remembered that position using its motor guide position.

The motor guide position is behind the left white cover on the idrive. It is the black plastic ring moving along the white plastic screw. When the garage door is down, the black plastic ring should be on the left side of the white plastic screw. When the garage door is up, the black plastic ring should be on the right of the white plastic screw. If the black plastic ring hits either end of the white plastic screw before the garage door reaches one end or another, the garage door will stop abruptly.

When you get into this situation, you have to disconnect the idrive from the garage door. Easiest way is to disconnect the geared drive wheels from the torsion bar. Once you've disconnect the idrive from the garage door, rotate the white plastic screw (with the idrive disengaged) until the black plastic ring in the position that matches where the garage door rests. Then you can reconnect the idrive to the garage door.

"disconnect the geared drive wheels from the torsion bar" - Does that mean uninstalling the idrive and torsion bar, and sliding the idrive off of the torsion bar? The idrive does not want to move on the torsion bar.

No. There are two large gears on both sides of the idrive. These two gears fastens the idrive to the torsion bar. When you take apart these two large gears, the idrive and the torsion bar become disconnected.

Do you have any pictures of motor guide position component(s)?

Thanks,

Title: idrive Won't Profile? Check the position of the travel sensor
Weblog: GearHack
Excerpt: If your idrive has the same symptoms as the fuse blown problem, but a new fuse won't correct it, try checking he position of the travel sensor. Its the black ring that rides the white threaded OD tube. My door had failed part of the way up due to a broken torsion spring, and it behaved exactly like . . .
