How to Determine If You have the Proper USB Type-C Data Cable for the Heltec V3 LoRa IoT Development Board?

Using the correct data cable for the ESP32 is crucial because not all USB cables are created equal. Some USB cables are designed solely for charging and do not support data transfer. If you use a charge-only cable, your computer will not be able to communicate with the ESP32, leading to issues such as the device not being recognized or failing to upload code.

Additionally, poor-quality or damaged cables can cause intermittent connections, resulting in data packet loss during communication. This can lead to errors like "Failed to connect" or "Timed out" when trying to upload code to the ESP3234. To avoid these problems, it's recommended to use a high-quality USB cable that supports data transfer and ensure it is securely connected to both the computer and the ESP32.

The surest way to determine whether your USB Type-C cable is capable of transferring data is to perform the following steps:

  1. Ensure the USB cable and the Heltec V3 board is not plugged into the Windows computer.
  2. Start "Device Manager" on your Windows computer. You can start it by searching for "Device Manager" in the Windows Start menu.
  3. Ensure that there is no "CP201x" related device(s) under the "Other devices" and "Ports (COM & LPT)" category.
  4. Plug the USB Type-C cable into the USB port on your Windows computer.
  5. Plug the USB Type-C cable into Heltec V3 board. Note that it can take your computer up to 10 seconds to detect the board.
  6. Do you hear your computer make the typical sound when you plug in a USB device? If so, it's a good sign that you have a USB Type-C data cable. But continue with the following step to be sure.
  7. Look under "Other devices" category in "Device Manager" and see if "CP2102 USB to UART Bridge Controller" shows up (see screen shot below). If so, you have a proper data cable. But you are missing the device driver for the Heltec V3 board. If you don't see that entry, see next step.
  8. Look under "Ports (COM & LPT)" category in "Device Manager" and see if "Silicon Labs CP210x USB to UART Bridge (COM5)" shows up (see screen shot below). The "COM5" could be any COM port available on your computer. If so, you have the proper data cable and the proper device driver.
