Asus G46VW - Dual Boot Ubuntu 12.10 with Pre-Installed Windows 8

After Wrestling with Windows 8, Secure Boot, and UEFI to Boot USB Flash Drive, I finally figure out a working solution to get Ubuntu 12.10 to work happily with the pre-installed Windows 8. My goal is to get Mac OS X on this awesome Asus G46VW-BSI5N06 gaming ultrabook as well. But I'm happy at this point and this thread will walk you through it.

1. Get a copy of Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop (64-bit) and load it onto a USB drive. 32-bit won't work.
2. Load up Windows 8 and Shrinking Windows 8 Partition so that you have space to install Ubuntu Linux.
3. Restart the G46VW and enter BIOS with the F2 key.
4. Disable "Fast Boot" from the "Boot" menu. Apparently, this is a Windows 8 hibernation function.
5. Disable "Secure Boot Control" under the "Security" menu.
6. Save Changes and Exit.
7. Tap the ESC key to bring up the boot selection screen.
8. Select the Ubuntu USB drive from the boot selection screen.
9. Select "Install Ubuntu" from the GNU GRUB boot menu.
10. Install Ubuntu by following all the prompts.

After you have finished installing Ubuntu, you now have a dual-boot machine. The following steps shows you how to boot each of the two operating system. It's not perfect, but it works.

Boot Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop

To boot Ubuntu, set "Secure Boot Control" to disabled in the BIOS. You'll boot into GNU GRUB and it will automatically boot Ubuntu in 10 seconds.

You can't boot Windows 8 in with "Secure Boot Control" disabled. If you try to boot Windows 8 with GNU GRUB, you'll get the following error message:

error: can't find command `drivemap'.
error: invalid EFI file path.

Press any key to continue...

Boot Windows 8

To boot Windows, set "Secure Boot Control" to enabled in the BIOS. You'll get a "Secure Boot Violation: Invalid signature detected. Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup" message. Press "Ok" to continue. Windows 8 will load automatically after that.

If you use ubuntu 12.10 secure remix 64-bit you don't have to switch boot modes in bios. I'm running the stock W8 side-by-side with secure-remix. My only issues are the brightness fn keys not working and the right track button not working (but tapping right side of touchpad does work).

Thanks a lot! My Ubuntu 13.04 works perfectly now!!

Just like you, I'm now wondering to install Mac OS X (with this tutorial from tonymac http://www.tonymacx86.com/61-unibeast-install-os-x-mountain- . . . )

Did you manage to install mac osx without losing the pre-installed windows 8?

Thanks for your help!

I got stuck with making a bootable version of iATKOS ML2 USB drive. See my trouble here: How to make a bootable iATKOS ML2 USB drive on Mac OS X.

Right now, I'm only booting into Windows 8 and running Ubuntu 13.04 and Max OS X 10.8 in virtual machines.

If you can figure out a way to get Asus G46VW to boot Mac OS X, please post it in that thread, or create a new thread on how you did it. That would really re-spark my interest, because I've exhausted everything I can think of. Thanks.
