Disable Thumbs.db on Windows 7

In previous versions of Windows, you can easily disable Thumbs.db from being generated by Windows Explorer in the options. However, that option disappeared from Windows 7. This is a way to hack the Windows 7 registry to disable Thumbs.db. But to make your life easier, I've attached the modification in the attached registry file. Just download it to your desktop, double-click it, answer "Yes" to the "Are you sure you want to continue?" question, and you are all done. You might have to restart Windows Explorer or restart your computer for the change to take effect.

Why would you want to disable Thumbs.db?

  1. It uses up network bandwidth if you access network drives.
  2. Thumbs.db takes up disk space.
  3. Thumbs.db causes folders to lock, thus wasting your time when you want to make changes.

This registry hack does not work on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. Does anyone know how to disable thumbs.db on Windows 8?
