Remote Desktop Stops Working on Windows 7 Home Premium

Remote Desktop server is disabled by default on Windows 7 Home Premium. You can enable it by following instructions here: "Enable Remote Desktop Connection on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1". If you have enabled Remote Desktop server on Windows 7 Home Premium, then you may find that the latest set of Windows Update patches breaks it.

The actual patch that breaks it is KB2984972. You can find more information about this update here: "Update for RDC 7.1 to support restricted administration logons on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2".

You can fix this Remote Desktop server problem by uninstalling this update from your system. To do that, launch "Windows Update", find KB2984972 and remove it.

Windows will continue its attempt to apply this update after you uninstall it. I just gone through the painful experience of having to uninstall it again.

To keep Windows from applying this update in the future, go to Windows Update, uncheck this update, then right click on it. Next, select "Hide update". That will prevent Windows Update from applying it in the future and telling you about it.

Microsoft released another update today that breaks the Remote Desktop functionality on Windows 7 Home Premium. That's the KB3003743 patch. You can read about it here: MS14-074: Vulnerability in Remote Desktop Protocol could allow security feature bypass: November 11, 2014. Once you uninstall this patch, Remote Desktop will work once again on Windows 7 Home Premium.

Brilliant!

I use RDC on my Win7 HP, and it stopped working some days ago ... so I googled and did find your post. Did the uninstall and future hide of both KB updates, and RDC is up working again.

Thanks!

Brilliant! Saved me re-installing my dad's operating system (but found your article too late for my own - bit the bullet and installed Professional instead.)

Does anyone know explicitly what vulnerabilities we are accepting by not installing these two updates?
