PS2: The Myth of Hefty Expandability / Connectivity Options

Today, I came across an article called "Patience 360: Ten Reasons to Wait for PS3". It's a well-written article that captured some of the thoughts in the back of my mind. I agree with 9 out of 10 reasons that it mentioned. The one that bugged me the most is "Reason #8: Hefty Expandability / Connectivity Options".

It's great that PS3 has a bunch of ports for expansion. But look at PlayStation 2. PS2 also has two USB ports, a Firewire port, and other more proprietary ports in the back. Out of these ports only the network port is heavily utilized. Only recently, the EyeToy has been a big hit with many games utilizing it. USB keyboard and mouse support has existed from day one, yet there are virtually no games that would support them. Even Killzone, an high anticipated game that would have massive advantage of using the mouse only support the keyboard for entering your name!

Just thinking of the USB and Firewire port on the PS2 going to waste frustrates me. Just imagine being able to plug in a Firewire hard drive, a USB keyboard, and a USB mouse for some creativity track building in Gran Turismo. Think Destruction Derby on the old Commodore 64; build and race on your own tracks.

Unless developers get creative and build some interesting uses of the ports on PS3, the hefty expandability and connectivity options are just a bunch of crock.
