The New PS3 Slim, Just not worth it.The new Playstation 3 system is now in stores for your gamer bliss, but less for geeks. The new model of the PS3 was release a couple days ago, but I had to wait for payday to get it. So sing the songs of the gaming gods, its pay day. I got this thing this morning and so far, it's okay. If I didn't need the room in my current entertainment center for other things, I would get the older model. So let me give you a quick rundown of this my new toy. First, it is smaller, which I have my own issues with that. I guess I just don't like small things. The Sega Saturn was a great size for me, this not so much. I know people like it when their electronics get smaller for space and weight. I just feel like I could break things more easily when they get smaller. Enough for that rant, size is something that bothers me, sorry. Getting on with the show, it looks kinda like the PS2, big top, small bottom. Thou it almost seems like a Asian knock off import where the finish is concerned. Not very Sony looking I guess. It has a lot bigger hard drive for your data storing pleasure. You can also remove and upgrade the hard disc too, this time without the hassles of models before. Just remove two screws and replace. I also like that you don't need a degree in programming to slap any notebook drive in. I really hated that about the Xbox systems. The moot point about the hard drive is, well, they killed Linux. For most gamers, this isn't a big issue. I like being able to run something else besides the built in crap programs that Sony shipped with this thing. Sorry people but the web browser is a joke. The processor has been shrunk to save power, a plus for people with high power bills. Like most gamers, I always have high power bills, so it helps. This will save a couple dollars that we can better used getting more games. With things that come with shrinkage, the fan and Blue-Ray drive seem a little more quite. I can still hear the fan but being a PC gamer, I am used to the sound. It's when I don't hear the fans that I start get worried. Also, no IR port to been seen either, sorry older PS2 add-on users. Speaking of no IR port, wait, I guessed that also means they axed something else. I was right, slipping a PS2 game into the tray resulted in, and you'd guessed it, no PS2 support! That brought a tear to my eye, so I now have to get a PS2 now. I hate it when companies save money by taking out backward compatibility. I now feel like a apple user now because they do the same damn thing. Nothing is backwards compatible. Take the upgrade, buy new everything, and love it. Sorry Apple fan boys but it's the truth. So in closing, do I think you should get this machine? Not unless you don't have any space, ps2 games, or like the look of ugly. Most stores are still selling the older models for about the same price, I would get them before they run out. Then after all the stores sell out, and you can't get a relatively new, older model PS3 on eBay, then I would say get this machine. Until next time, happy gaming...or not. Jack Lindblad
