Android OS on Verizon XV6900 (HTC Touch)

Trying to install Android OS on my Verizon XV6900 now. I found installation instruction for it here: http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Installing_Android

That page directed me to the latest build, which is Kaiser, for Vogue (HTC Touch), which is located here: http://www.androidonhtc.com/wiki/Latest_Builds_%28Vogue%29

I downloaded "haretinstall.zip" and "basefiles-20091116.zip", but looks like the latter has everything I needed. I took the "android" folder from "basefiles-20091116.zip" and dropped it onto my microSD Card. Then I stuck it into the phone and ran "haret.exe" in Windows Mobile 6.1. It went through Linux boot process. And everything looked good until I got to the following messages:

losetup: /dev/block/loop1: No such file or directory
Failed
Failed to find system.img on SD Card
/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
/ #

And then the phone just sat there at the prompt. I can't do anything more. I'm sure it has something to do with "system.img", which the installation instruction mentioned. But it's no where to be found. Anyone got pass this message?

Ok. I figured it out. "basefiles-20091116.zip" is useless, at least for the intention of this article. Don't bother download it.

Note: Your HTC Touch has to be running Windows Mobile 6.1 in order for this to work. I tried this same procedure on my wife's Windows Mobile 6.0 and it does not work. You need to upgrade to WM 6.1 first.

You'll need "haretinstall.zip" and "polymod_2.1g.zip". Take the "andboot" folder inside "haretinstall.zip" and put it in the root directory on your microSD Card (FAT32). Then take "androidinstall.tgz" inside "polymod_2.1g.zip" and put it into "andboot" on your microSD Card.

Insert the microSD Card into your phone, if you haven't already done so. Use Windows Mobile "File Manager" to view the content of "andboot". Start "haret" that is in that directory. You will be presented with a dialog that has the "Run" button. Push and hold the center button on the directional pad until you get the the "Android Installer" screen. Use the center directional pad button to select "1. Install System". Select "Yes" for the next two questions. The installer will proceed to create all the necessary files to run Android on your HTC Touch.

Now is where you need patience. It takes a while to "format" the image files. You'll see lots of text after the image is "formatted." There are more wait time with the blinking cursor. Finally, you'll be back at the "Android Installer" screen. Select "10. Quit".

Now, you'll see "A N D R O I D" at the bottom of the screen. And it almost looks like it hung at the command prompt. But it hasn't it's starting the boot sequence. It take a long time to boot. When you see a graphical display with lots of colors swarming to form an 'X', it's a good sign that Android is booting. Did I say it takes a long time? Just wait. Eventually Android will finish booting.

I've figured out how to use all of the HTC Touch buttons with Android. I've posted the functions on this page:

I would love if someone could help me figure out where i'm going wrong here.... I am having the same problem. I have upgraded to 6.1. I am using a 1 gig microSD card with the files shown above.

I get it to the "run" screen - and it goes installing a bunch of files with a black background etc...

Then it still hits the error message above...

losetup: /dev/block/loop1: No such file or directory
Failed
Failed to reach system.img on SD Card

(differance of the word "find - reach) and I am not getting the text after that.

I never get to the "se the center directional pad button to select "1. Install System". Select "Yes" for the next two questions. The installer will proceed to create all the necessary files to run Android on your HTC Touch." part.

Anyone have any ideas?

Peter,

Sounds like you haven't installed the Android system yet. Did you get to the "Android Installer"?

To get there, you have to 'Push and hold the center button on the directional pad until you get the the "Android Installer" screen.' You do perform this step right after clicking the "Run" button.

Text messages and phone calls works for me right off the bat. I tried it on both Verizon and Sprint (two different HTC Touch phones). Who's your carrier?

I get the same error as Peter with the "Failed to reach system.img on SD Card"
The screen scrolls down very fast but I seem to make out something to do with Installer scrolling down. Once it reaches the last line about not finding system.img it sits there and I have to reset the phone. Any ideas?
