I'm having the same problem. As soon as the charging gives some jus, the player shows upgrader mode, after showing 'RIO' a few seconds, whithout the HD noise. I have tried a pin reset AND power button with same results. The battery stops charging as soon as upgrader mode shows; no full charge, no upgrade possible (to return to a old firmware). I have pushed the firmware 1.95 version. Can anyone help?

The problem is probably caused by hard disk failure.

The HDD in my Carbon Pearl kept losing the files I transferred to it, so yesterday I opened the player up, and removed it. And just now I switched it on, and... "UPGRADER".

Maybe you could buy a CompactFlash card (type 2) to put in there instead of the HDD. :)
